A search query can be a word or a phrase. This will allow you to search in the Opinions Archives Only. The tips shown below will help you expand the focus of your search to give more complete results.
Search queries are not case-sensitive. You can type your search in uppercase or lowercase.
To search by Public Domain Citation Number, enclose the citation in quotations.
Example: "2011 IL 111052"
Example: "2011 IL App (1st) 103604"
To search by Case/Docket Number, type the
case number without dashes.
Example: For 1-10-2000, type 1102000.
Consecutive words are treated as a phrase; they must appear in the same order within matching results.
Example: People v. Doe. (This query finds all pages that contain the phrase "People v. Doe " in this same order.)
To search for an exact phrase, enclose the phrase in double quotations.
Example: "Supreme Court Justices" (This query finds results containing this exact phrase.)
Search with Boolean operators (AND, OR, and NOT) and the proximity operator (NEAR) to create a more precise query. Example: art AND museum This query finds results containing both terms. Example: art OR museum This query finds results containing either term. Example: art AND NOT museum This query finds results containing the first term but not containing the second term. Example: art NEAR museum This query finds results containing both terms on the same page in close proximity.
The wildcard character (*) can match words with a given prefix. Example: comput* This query finds results containing the words "compute," "computer," "computing," and so on.
