WHEREAS, child abuse is a major cause of preventable death among children in our country; and
WHEREAS, child abuse is recognized as an ever increasing problem in today's society which affects the community as a whole; and
WHEREAS, child abuse can take the form of physical abuse, emotional abuse, sexual abuse andlor neglect; and
WHEREAS, all citizens can help stop child abuse in Illinois by being concerned about the health and safety of your neighborhood children and by calling 1-800-25ABUSE to report suspected child abuse; and
WHEREAS, the month of April has been designated National Child Abuse Prevention Month.
THEREFORE, I, Jim Edgar, Governor of the State of Illinois, proclaim April 1997 as Child Abuse Prevention Month in Illinois, and urge all Illinois residents to become active partners in efforts to prevent child abuse.
