Illinois Department of Children and Family Services

The Illinois Department of Children and Family Services is the state agency charged with safeguarding the welfare of Illinois children. This broad mission includes a wide variety of social work activities, ranging from investigating reports of abuse and neglect, keeping families together by providing supportive services to ease family problems, arranging for appropriate substitute care for children when they must be removed from their homes, and developing long-term plans for abused and neglected children. DCFS staff are involved in a wide variety of other professional activities which include recruiting and training foster parents, arranging access to education, health, and specialized services for children in care, working with families toward reunification, arranging adoptions, supervising services provided by private agencies, and coordinating with the legal system.
