2012 Gottfried Award
The Theodore A. Gottfried award is presented to a member of the Support Staff who has demonstrated excellence in job performance, exercised leadership, contributed to a positive work environment, and exhibited professionalism and dedication to the work of the Agency and the clients we all serve. This year, three outstanding employees were presented the Gottfried Award.

Caroline L. Brown, Human Resource Assistant in the Administrative Office, was presented the Gottfried Award at a reception in her honor in Springfield on April 18. 2012 Haddad Award
The James B. Haddad Award was established in memory of James Haddad, a distinguished lawyer, teacher and author who throughout his career was associated with the Office of the State Appellate Defender. This year, the Haddad Award was presented to two deserving recipients - Martin J. Ryan, Assistant Appellate Defender in the Fourth District Office, and Laura A. Weiler, Assistant Appellate Defender in the First District Office.

2012 Hughes Award
A new Agency award was established by the Board of Commissioners in honor of Patrick J. Hughes, former First Assistant State Appellate Defender. This award is to be presented to a Supervisor who has demonstrated excellence in his/her performance as a Supervisor that has resulted in high-quality representation of clients by those supervised. The first Hughes Award recipient is Patricia Mysza, Supervisor in the First District Office.

2011 Gottfried Award
The Theodore A. Ann Marie Corona, Administrative Secretary in the First District office, was presented the 2011 Gottfried Award at a reception in her honor on June 9, 2011.

2011 Haddad Award
James B. Haddad was a former member of the State Appellate Defender Board of Commissioners and was a distinguished criminal law teacher and scholar. The 2011 James B. Haddad Award was presented to James E. Chadd, Assistant Deputy Defender in the First District office, on June 9, 2011, at a reception in his honor. Jim Chadd was presented the Haddad award in recognition of a career of extraordinary legal representation and compassionate concern for the welfare of indigent clients.

March 31, 2011 Reception to Honor Employees of the Capital Trial Assistance Unit, the Capital Post-Conviction Unit and the Supreme Court Unit

At a reception on March 31, 2011, in the First District Office in Chicago the following attorneys were presented with the final Richard E. Cunningham award. 2011 John R. Justice Student Loan Repayment Program
The John R. Justice Student Loan Repayment Program provides for the payment of eligible educational loans (both Federal Family Education Loan Program [FFELP] and Federal Direct Loans) for state and federal public defenders and state prosecutors who agree to remain employed as public defenders and prosecutors for at least three years.

2010 Gottfried Award
The first Theodore A. Gottfried award was presented to Sandi Begue, Administrative Secretary in the 4th District office, on May 13, 2010, at a reception in her honor. Sandi Begue was presented the Gottfried award in recognition of a career marked by extraordinary dedication, professionalism and leadership and her significant contribution to fulfilling the agency’s mission of providing high quality representation to our indigent clients.

2010 Haddad Award
James B. Haddad was a former member of the State Appellate Defender Board of Commissioners and was a distinguished criminal law teacher and scholar. The 2010 James B. Haddad Award was presented to Kathleen J. Hamill, an Assistant Appellate Defender in the Second District office, on March 2, 2010, at a reception in her honor. Kathy Hamill was presented the Haddad award in recognition of a career of extraordinary legal representation and compassionate concern for the welfare of indigent clients.

2010 Cunningham Award
Richard E. Cunningham was a former Assistant Appellate Defender and capital panel attorney, who was nationally recognized as an exceptional capital defense advocate and a tenacious champion of the rights of his capital clients.
The 2010 Richard E. Cunningham Award was presented to Charles (Chick) W. Hoffman, an Assistant Appellate Defender in the Supreme Court Unit, on April 8, 2010, at a reception in his honor. Chick Hoffman was presented the Cunningham Award in recognition of a career marked by extraordinary legal representation, compassionate concern for the welfare of capital clients and zealous advocacy in support of the constitutional precepts of due process and equal protection

2007 Haddad & Cunningham Awards
On December 6, 2007 two State Appellate Defender employees were honored
for their excellent service to indigent clients. Karen Munoz, an
Assistant Defender in the Fourth District Office in Springfield, was presented
the 2007 James B. Haddad Award. James B. Haddad was a former member
of the State Appellate Defender Board of Commissioners and a distinguished
criminal law teacher and scholar. This award recognizes Munoz for providing
high quality legal representation and for her dedication in the struggle
for fairness and justice for clients and for the improvement of the
justice system.
Allen Andrews, an Assistant Defender in the Supreme
Court Unit, was presented the 2007 Richard E. Cunningham Award. This
award is given in memory of former Assistant Defender and nationally
recognized Death Penalty Litigator Richard E. Cunningham, and recognized
Andrews' distinguished service as an exceptional death penalty defense
attorney and tireless advocate in the continuing struggle for fairness
and justice in Illinois capital cases.

2006 Haddad & Cunningham Awards
On April 6, 2006 two State Appellate Defender employees were honored
for their excellent service to indigent clients. Barbara C. Kamm, an
Assistant Defender in the First District Office in Chicago, was presented
the 2006 James B. Haddad Award. James B. Haddad was a former member
of the State Appellate Defender Board of Commissioners and a distinguished
criminal law teacher and scholar. This award recognizes Kamm for providing
high quality legal representation and for her dedication in the struggle
for fairness and justice for clients and for the improvement of the
justice system.
Steven L. Clark, an Assistant Defender in the Supreme
Court Unit, was presented the 2006 Richard E. Cunningham Award. This
award is given in memory of former Assistant Defender and nationally
recognized Death Penalty Litigator Richard E. Cunningham, and recognized
Clark's distinguished service as an exceptional death penalty defense
attorney and tireless advocate in the continuing struggle for fairness
and justice in Illinois capital cases.

Meritorious Service Awards

At the September 25, 2009, Board of Commissioners meeting, Chairman Thomas M. Breen (right), presented the Honorable E. Kyle Vantrease (left) with a Meritorious Service Award in recognition of his outstanding service as a member of the Board.

At the August, 2007, Board of Commissioners Meeting, Judge David R. Donnersberger, Vice Chairman (left), presented a Meritorious Service Award in recognition of outstanding service to Judge M. At the August, 2006, Board of Commissioners Meeting,Theodore Gottfried, Appellate Defender, Office of the
State Appellate Defender presented a Meritorious Service Award in recognition
of outstanding service to Justice Thomas E. Callum, for his service
as a member of the Board.

At the August, 2004, Board of Commissioners Meeting, Theodore
Gottfried, Appellate Defender, Office of the State Appellate Defender
presented a Meritorious Service Award in recognition of outstanding
service to Scott Turow, for his service as Chairman of the Board.

At the August, 2004, Board of Commissioners Meeting, Theodore
Gottfried, Appellate Defender, Office of the State Appellate Defender
presented a Meritorious Service Award in recognition of outstanding
service to Judge Mel R. Jiganti, for his service as a member of the
Board.
Tipton Award to Bergschneider
for Criminal Law Decisions
Springfield attorney David P. Bergschneider will receive the ISBA's
Virgil E. Tipton Jr. Publications Award at the Annual Meeting awards
luncheon Friday, June 18, at The Abbey on Lake Geneva.
Bergschneider, who is legal director in the Office of the State Appellate
Defender, is the author and editor of the 1998 edition of "Illinois
Handbook of Criminal Law Decisions" and its 2003 supplement.
These ISBA reference publications consist of more than a thousand pages
of meticulously categorized case summaries and are considered "a
significant gift of information to Illinois criminal practitioners,"
said John J. Johnston, chair of the Bar Publications Board.
The sale of 2,544 copies of the handbook and supplement also have generated
more than $130,000 in non-dues revenue for the association.
Bergschneider, a past chair of the ISBA Criminal Justice Section Council,
has compiled the criminal law publication since 1997. He took over from
Robert E. Davidson, a previous Tipton Award recipient, who had produced
it in various versions since the early 1970s.
