Philanthropist Joseph Farwell Glidden was responsible for producing the first easy-to-manufacture and economic
fencing material when he invented what became the most widely used form of barbed wire in 1874. "The Winner"
barbed wire was responsible for "taming the West" and making railroad rights-of-way safer.
Glidden's 1861 home is now the site of an emerging cultural center and living history museum.
Both the home and unique brick barn where Glidden's famous barbed wire was first manufactured are listed
on the National Register of Historic PLaces. A working blacksmith shop opened in 2010. Special
programs and exhibits highlight Glidden's contribution to the economic development of both the region and the nation.
