Radon Measurement Laboratories and Low Cost Detectors

The Illinois Emergency Management Agency (IEMA) is providing this information to assist you with selecting a radon measurement laboratory and a testing device for performing home environment measurements.

The Radon Measurement Laboratories listing only includes those laboratories that have demonstrated their ability to measure radon accurately and that have applied and received a license in Illinois.

These laboratories can sell you a radon detector(s) by mail order or directly from their website.  IEMA is providing the list of devices for your convenience and will attempt to maintain this list current. Be sure to verify with the laboratory the actual purchase price.

Only a person performing radon measurement on a dwelling in which that person resides may perform a measurement without a Radon Measurement License from the IEMA.  IEMA recommends that homes involved in a real estate transaction have radon measurements performed by a Radon Measurement Licensee.  IEMA believes that it is neither in the best interest of the buyer or seller to rely on a measurement that is not performed by a licensee.

In order to accurately determine the radon concentration of your home, IEMA recommends you follow the instructions provided with the test kit to place and retrieve the detector.  Additionally, IEMA suggests you review and follow our Guidelines for Radon Measurements in the Home to determine the number of detectors needed, the locations for placement and general testing protocols.  Ensure at the completion of the radon measurement that the test kit is mailed back to the laboratory in accordance with the instructions provided with the kit.

Radon contact information, websites, and type of detectors are provided below.  The following codes are used to identify the type of detectors available.

Short Term Testing Devices (usually 2 - 7 days)

AC - Activated Charcoal
LS - Liquid Scintillation
ES - Electret Short Term
CR - Continuous Radon Monitor

Long Term Devices (greater than 90 day tests)

AT - Alpha Track
LT - Electret Long Term

If you need additional information or are not satisfied with the service offered by a listed laboratory, please contact the Agency by using the Radon Information Line at (800) 325-1245.
