Liquor education on tap before Super Bowl Sunday weekend
State, local officials ‘team up’ to ensure responsible alcohol use

DECATUR—Next week, Illinois Lieutenant Governor Sheila Simon will kick off a variety of educational activities here focusing on the safe, responsible, and legal use of alcohol on Super Bowl Sunday.
On Wednesday, January 25, 6:00 pm, Lt. Gov. Simon will transmit live comments from Springfield at the Illinois Liquor Control Commission’s (ILCC) inaugural Parental Responsibility campaign event, to be held at Main Street Church, 2000 North Main Street in Decatur. Following the Lt. Governor’s opening remarks, there will be a panel discussion about underage drinking.
Open to the public, over one hundred parents and teenagers are expected to attend. Among the topics to be discussed by ILCC staff, prevention/ treatment professionals, religious leaders, educational officials, and law enforcement personnel will be how parents and teenagers can view with a critical eye the ever-present and popular beer ads aired during the Super Bowl telecast. The Liquor Commission’s new parental responsibility program was launched just prior to New Year’s Eve, and is designed to help Illinois parents reduce the incidence of underage and binge drinking. Over fifty organizations and elected officials from across the state have signed on to this effort thus far (click for list of partners).
Then, on Thursday, January 26, the ILCC will host two free alcohol training classes for all central Illinois liquor establishment employees and local elected officials. Through this training, liquor retailers can learn how to operate safely, and legally, and profitably while conducting Super Bowl Sunday festivities. Finally, on Friday, January 27, Meridian High School students will learn about the physical, legal, and mental health effects of underage drinking during an all-school assembly. It will conclude with stars from the school’s varsity basketball team providing a persuasive demonstration on how alcohol can affect a user’s perception of reality.
