Even though the Beverage Alcohol Sellers and Servers Education
and Training (BASSET) Program is not mandatory in the State of
Illinois, many businesses throughout the state participate in
the training.
BASSET training teaches interpersonal skills necessary to discourage
over consumption and provides servers with a number of alternatives
to alcohol when dealing with a patron who is visibly intoxicated.
The program also emphasizes responsible serving practices by preventing
intoxicated individuals from driving. In addition, the program
provides a skill necessary to carefully validate ID's to prevent
underage drinking which in turn leads to less drunk drivers.
Furthermore, other benefits exit for BASSET participants. Liquor
establishments can also have their insurance rates reduced by
requiring their employees to attend a BASSET training course.
As additional liquor licensees support the BASSET Program more
communities and local liquor establishments will become safer
places.
