TOPS is an acronym representing an intergenerational program called Talented Older Persons in Schools. Funding became available for TOPS in July 2000. TOPS programs encourage and provide opportunities for Illinois seniors to become volunteer role models in schools and become volunteers at an intergenerational after-school family resource center.
| In Fiscal Year 2002, the TOPS program had over 180 dedicated senior volunteers that provided 20,273 volunteer hours to over 1100 students. |
The TOPS program complements the Illinois Department on Aging’s mission of encouraging intergenerational involvement and providing meaningful volunteer opportunities for seniors. TOPS senior volunteers serve as tutors for k-6th grade students who are struggling academically, assist with lunch room and/or playground monitoring and enhance the overall safety of the grade schools through their presence.
