Director of Aging Salutes Older Illinois Women

SPRINGFIELD, IL – Illinois Department on Aging Director Margo E. Schreiber encourages Illinoisans to reflect upon the contributions of older women in shaping their communities as part of Womenís History Month, celebrated in March.

"It is fundamental that children learn how women fought for suffrage, served in war, invented medicines and helped build our nation," said Schreiber. "Letís also remember our own everyday heroines, those who inspired us personally and helped shape us as individuals."

Schreiber said the month is an ideal time to recognize women caregivers who often care for aging parents while raising their own family, or older women who serve as volunteers in communities across Illinois.

"The Illinois Department on Agingís programs are strengthened statewide by older women professionals and volunteers who deliver meals to homebound elderly, visit nursing homes, deliver homemaker services and more," Schreiber added.

"These are women who enable others to maintain a high quality of life, and we are indebted to them. They are true heros."
