Registration Open for Satellite Teleconference

SPRINGFIELD, IL – Illinois Department on Aging Director Margo E. Schreiber invites the public to register for a statewide satellite teleconference to be held May 16, 2001, which will promote dialogue among five generations and address the importance of helping family caregivers.

The teleconference, titled "Intergenerational Dialogue: A Tool for Solving Problems," will originate from Springfield and will feature Dr. James Gambone, a national authority on the benefits of intergenerational communication.

Dr. Gambone and unrelated representatives of five living generations will discuss the characteristics of each generation, and how they may work together to address community needs. The generations range from the "G.I. Generation" – those born between 1901 – 1931 to the "Millennial Generation" – those born between 1982 –2003.

The Illinois Department on Aging is sponsoring the event, along with the University of Illinois Extension Services and the Illinois State Library. The event will highlight Intergenerational Week, celebrated May 13-19, 2001.

"We look forward to encouraging the use of this dialogue for resolving family, community and organizational problems," Schreiber said. "We will also be using it as a tool to discuss the needs of family caregivers, which is an issue affecting all generations."

Interested individuals and groups such as social service agencies, clergy, garden clubs, Boys and Girls Clubs, Big Brother/Big Sister programs, health care workers, AARP, retiree groups and more are encouraged to attend.

Individuals who gather at each of the thirteen statewide satellite broadcast sites will discuss issues with Dr. Gambone and representatives of five generations. A facilitator will be present at each of the thirteen sites. Group discussions involving the five generations will follow.

The satellite broadcast will be held from 9 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. See the list below for locations.
