FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE CONTACT: Jan Costello September 27, 2002 "Pioneering Approaches to Long Term Care" Workshops Offered SPRINGFIELD, IL Illinois Department on Aging Director Margo E. Schreiber invites nursing home administrators, social workers, registered nurses, dietary managers and other interested professionals to attend an October workshop focusing on the national movement to reform nursing home care. The workshop will be repeated in three locations: October 8, 2002, at the Kenneth Young Center, 1001 Rohlwing Road, Elk Grove Village; October 9, 2002, at the Levy Center, 3003 Dodge, Evanston; and October 10, 2002, at Senior Services of Will County, 251 North Center, Joliet. Each session will be held from 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. The "Pioneer" movement is gaining momentum nationwide," Schreiber said. "The Department strives to keep professionals, volunteers and family members informed about this new, home-like approach to institutional care." Titled "Pioneering Approaches to Long Term Care: Implementing Strategies and Practices," the workshop will feature a presentation by Jennifer Gettman, Nursing Home Administrator from National Health Care in Maryland Heights, Missouri. Gettman will discuss what has worked in her 220-bed registered Eden Alternative facility. Gettman belongs to a new movement that is transforming the culture of how residents and staff live and work together, an approach that is gaining momentum with providers, physicians and other health care professionals across the nation. The workshop is sponsored by the Illinois Department on Aging Long Term Care Ombudsman Program. Six continuing education unit hours are available for Illinois-licensed nursing home administrators, social workers, registered nurses, activity professionals and certified dietary managers. ###
