Judge Michael J. Murphy
First District, 3rd Division
Michael J. Murphy was born in Chicago and graduated from Loyola University.
Judge Murphy graduated first in his class from John Marshall Law School and was
awarded a post graduate scholarship to their Lawyer’s Institute. Judge Murphy enjoys
local and national recognition as a leader in judicial education having taught at
Northwestern; Chicago-Kent; Loyola; University of Chicago; and John Marshall Law
Schools.
Prior to sitting on the bench, Judge Murphy was a special agent in the organized
Crime Division, U.S. Treasury Department; Assistant Attorney General, Criminal
Justice Division and Chief of the Civil Rights Division, Illinois Attorney General’s Office; and Executive Director of the South East Chicago Commission.
Judge Murphy was appointed to the Illinois Appellate Court in 2005, and elected in
2006. Judge Murphy served as a Cook County associate judge in 1985 and was elected
as a Cook County Circuit Court judge in 1992. He was supervising judge in Housing
Court and in 1999 he was appointed as the presiding judge of the Circuit Court of
Cook County, County Division.
Judge Murphy is an active supporter of numerous charitable and advocacy
organizations including Lawyer’s Assistance Program, and Grateful House.
