Electronic Warrants

The Illinois Supreme Court is exploring the concept of issuing and transmitting warrants electronically. Paper-based warrant systems contain many inherent problems. Warrants are normally a single, paper document that must be physically handled by each agency involved in the process and physically moved to the next agency in the process. Because of this manual process, the potential for error is great. Paper can be lost or damaged. Physical transport during the process amounts for huge amounts of time, often requiring law enforcement officers to be drawn away from other duties to become a messenger service.

The concept being explored would allow warrants to be issued and delivered electronically between agencies within the judicial system to reduce delays and associated costs.
