Description of Position:

This non-supervisory, professional position is responsible for the day-to-day operations of the Language Access Program within the Administrative Office of the Illinois Courts.  The Language Access Services Specialist provides, facilitates, and coordinates statewide communication regarding the need for, and availability of, language access services in Illinois' courts for those with limited English proficiency.  This position will work closely with all of Illinois' courts and the Supreme Court's Access to Justice Commission and promote collaboration with national entities to form best practices and resource sharing in language access and interpreter services. Activities include: develop and aid in the implementation of the Language Access Plan; coordinate the testing of interpreters for statewide certification; maintain and distribute a statewide roster of interpreters and translators; organize and attend to matters related to interpreter skill building workshops and testing processes; assist judicial circuits with language access issues; develop data collection procedures and perform data analysis; explore and recommend strategies to improve current language access policies;  explore and coordinate the use of technology for remote interpreter services; develop and prepare grant applications; and perform public outreach as necessary.


Requirements:

Minimum:  Bachelor’s degree in court administration, public administration, criminal justice administration, business administration or a related field of study and a minimum three (3) years of progressively responsible experience in program administration required or, in lieu of three years' experience, an advanced degree in law, court administration, public administration, criminal justice administration, business administration or a related field of study.  

Preferred:  Advanced degree in law, court administration, public administration, criminal justice administration, or a related field of study plus three (3) to five (5) years experience in program administration or three (3) to five (5) years experience in language access or court interpreter program management.  Fluency in a second language or English as a second language.


Physical Requirements:
Ability to sit for extended time periods. Professional office working environment requiring telephone usage and ability to process written documents.  In-state and minimal out-of-state overnight travel is required.
