Citizen-To-Citizen Grant Recipients
The main source of funding for the Citizen-To-Citizen grants is the Illinois Tax Checkoff Fund where taxpayers can choose a cause to which they wish to donate part of their tax refund. In 1996, taxpayers contributed $175,912 to the Child Abuse Prevention Fund Checkoff.

Ten Local Area Networks have received Citizen-To-Citizen II competitive grant awards. The grants of up to $40,000 will help develop or expand local child abuse and neglect prevention services for families.

Three statewide child abuse prevention programs also received grants. They include Prevent Child Abuse-Illinois for parent education on the first 12 months of child development, Northern Illinois University's Department of Psychological Services for therapy serving mothers victimized as children, and Children's Home and Aid Society to add a children's component to its Parents Anonymous program.

The Citizen-To-Citizen program was established in 1995 in collaboration with the Statewide Citizens Committee on Child Abuse and Neglect. This program is funded by tax check-off dollars to expand prevention efforts and curb escalating child abuse and neglect in Illinois. Community leadership is emphasized because community members know best how to address local problems. To promote prevention activities at the grassroots level, all 62 LAN organizations in Illinois were offered non-competitive mini-grants of $10,000 to $16,500 for up to 18 months. Approximately 200 prevention programs were funded last year.

This year's Citizen-to-Citizen II program retained the grassroots focus and opened the competitive process to include statewide organizations willing to develop or expand prevention initiatives in consultation with LANs.
