The
Illinois Department of Children and Family Services is the state agency
charged with safeguarding the welfare of Illinois children. This broad
mission includes a wide variety of social work activities, ranging from
investigating reports of abuse and neglect, keeping families together
by providing supportive services to ease family problems, arranging for
appropriate substitute care for children when they must be removed from
their homes, and developing long-term plans for abused and neglected children.
DCFS staff are involved in a wide variety of other professional activities
which include recruiting and training foster parents, arranging access
to education, health, and specialized services for children in care, working
with families toward reunification, arranging adoptions, supervising services
provided by private agencies, and coordinating with the legal system.
