Potassium Iodide Now Available at Additional Pharmacies for Residents within 10 Miles of Nuclear Power Plants
SPRINGFIELD - People living within a 10-mile radius of the state's six operating nuclear power plants can now obtain their free Potassium Iodide (KI) pills from one of 64 participating pharmacies. The Illinois Emergency Management Agency (IEMA) today announced the addition of 16 Community Pharmacy Prescription Network pharmacies to the distribution program. The pills are also available at 48 participating Walgreens stores.
New Law Requires Radon Testing in Day Care Centers
SPRINGFIELD – Parents of children in day care will be better informed about levels of radon in their child's facility under a new law that took effect Jan. 1, 2013. Licensed day care centers and day care homes are now required to test for the radioactive gas, and beginning Jan. 1, 2014, day care centers will need to show proof the facility has been tested for radon within the last three years as part of the initial application or license renewal process.

The 2012 Emergency Response Guidebooks (ERG's) have arrived in Illinois
- IEMA is in the process of getting the ERG's to the distribution sites throughout Illinois. NOT All sites have been supplied yet.
- Only governmental first response agencies and EMS are provided free ERG's through the Illinois Emergency Management Agency.
- We have received enough ERG's to provide 1 book for every first response vehicle.
- 2008 ERG's should be used for training and classrooms.
- All private industry should contact the USDOT for purchasing information.
- IEMA will not be mailing these books out due to cost reductions. The links below provide distribution information.

We are asking that fire departments/EMS pick their ERG's up from fire departments on the fire department distribution list, law enforcement agencies pick their ERG's up from the MTU's and EMA/public works pick their ERG's up from IEMA Regional Offices or IEMA central offices. Governor Quinn Launches Grassroots Pension Reform Effort
CHICAGO – November 18, 2012. Governor Pat Quinn today launched an Internet grassroots campaign to increase public awareness about the need for pension reform in Illinois. Relaying a message from the next generation to today’s leaders, the "Thanks in Advance" public awareness campaign is part of the This is My Illinois initiative designed to educate citizens about the "squeeze" caused by skyrocketing pension costs, and activate them to advocate for pension reform using tech tools like Facebook, Twitter and email.
