ILCC cracks down on underage sales

DATE: October 6, 2008
CONTACT: Ted Penesis (

The Illinois Liquor Control Commission (ILCC) cited thirty liquor-licensed establishments in Illinois for sale of alcohol to minors as part of an undercover operation conducted by ILCC special agents. During these checks, agents closely supervised underage youths as they attempted to purchase alcohol in over one hundred liquor establishments located throughout the state.

The state penalties for serving alcohol to minors can include fines and/or liquor license suspension or revocation. Those cited will have their cases heard before the ILCC Board of Commissioners (click here for hearing dates and locations).

“Underage drinking is a serious problem and liquor licensees must check IDs,” says Lainie Krozel, Executive Director of the ILCC. “It only takes a moment to check an ID; there is no excuse for not doing so.”

The undercover operations are part of an ongoing statewide crackdown by ILCC agents to assure compliance with the law that prohibits the sale of alcohol to those under the age of 21. Also accompanying the agents on these checks are either Illinois State Police troopers or local law enforcement personnel, who handle the arrests of those selling to minors and issue other citations, if applicable.
