Illinois tobacco laws regulate the distribution, sale and
taxation of tobacco products and include penalties for violations.
Within these laws are provisions prohibiting the sale and purchase
of tobacco products, tobacco accessories and smoking herbs to persons
under the age of eighteen. Illinois laws are summarized in the Just
the Facts sheet provided below.
In addition
to state laws, many municipal governments have also established
similar laws including licensure, display of signs and include penalties
as well.
Federal Tobacco Laws
The Family Smoking Prevention and Tobacco Control Act was enacted in 2009, amending the Federal Food, Drug, and Cosmetic Act and providing the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) with the authority to regulate tobacco products, specifically cigarettes and smokeless tobacco.
