Staffing For Adequate Fire and Emergency Response (SAFER) Grant

The FY 23 SAFER application period will close April 12, 2024, at 5 p.m. EDT.

The Staffing for Adequate Fire and Emergency Response Grants (SAFER) was created to provide funding directly to fire departments and volunteer firefighter interest organizations to help them increase or maintain the number of trained, "front line" firefighters available in their communities.

"Be Alarmed!" 2023 Impact Report

“Be Alarmed!” is a fire safety education and smoke alarm installation program administered cooperatively between Camp I Am Me (CIAM) and the Office of the Illinois State Fire Marshal (OSFM). The program distributes fire safety education materials and 10-year sealed battery smoke alarms to fire departments in the state of Illinois. The fire departments then deliver the education while installing smoke alarms in at-risk homes within their communities. Both the educational materials and smoke alarms are provided at no cost as a result of funding from both the CIAM and OSFM.

Volunteer Emergency Worker Credit

The submission of the attestation by the Fire Chief has been extended until April 11, 2024 by the Illinois Department of Revenue.

The volunteer emergency worker credit is a $500 non-refundable credit that can be used to reduce your Illinois individual income tax liability.  The credit is awarded to volunteer fire service emergency workers that apply for, qualify for, and are awarded the credit.  The aggregate amount of all tax credits awarded in any calendar year may not exceed $5,000,000. Credits shall be awarded on a first-come, first-served basis.

Carbon Monoxide Safety

Illinoisans will be turning up their thermostats to stay warm during the winter season, which brings an increased risk for home fires and carbon monoxide incidents. Unlike smoke, carbon monoxide is a colorless and odorless gas only detectable by special devices and CO alarms. The Office of the State Fire Marshal (OSFM) encourages residents to have their furnaces checked, change furnace filters, and make sure carbon monoxide (CO) and smoke detectors are functioning properly.
